MGS achieves LGBT Charter Award
Our ongoing work to become an LGBTQ+ inclusive organisation has been recognised with a Silver Charter Award from LGBT Youth Scotland.
The award reflects our commitment to ensuring that LGBTQ+ staff, stakeholders, and community partners feel supported and included. It is an important part of our wider efforts to embed anti-oppression into all areas of our work.
We achieved the Charter Award by undertaking several organisation-wide measures set by LGBT Youth Scotland, a leading LGBTQ+ rights charity. This included staff training, a review of our policies and resources, and the development of an LGBTQ+ action plan.
LGBT Youth Scotland said:
“We are delighted to award Museum Galleries Scotland the Silver LGBT Charter Award and congratulate everyone involved in this important and impactful journey.
“Museums Galleries Scotland ensured their Charter journey was meaningful, intersectional, and connected to their wider work as the national development body for the museum sector. Their support for queer heritage and collections demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that LGBTQ+ histories are not only recognised but actively preserved, explored, and shared.”
MGS CEO Lucy Casot said:
“I’m proud of the progress that Museums Galleries Scotland is making towards becoming an anti-oppressive organisation. The Silver LGBT Charter Award marks a milestone in our efforts to develop a more inclusive museum sector. I’m thankful to LGBT Youth Scotland for their role in supporting this necessary work.”
We are the third heritage organisation to receive an LGBT Youth Scotland Charter Award, following Historic Environment Scotland in 2024 and V&A Dundee in 2025.
We will continue to support LGBTQ+ equity across the museum sector by delivering on the objectives of our dedicated LGBTQ+ action plan. This will involve the development of new resources for museums and galleries and a sector-wide awareness campaign.
