Introduction
This one-day facilitated course is offered as part of the Museum Futures programme.
The Climate and Nature Planning course helps museums and galleries to embed planetary action into their existing organisational plans. The course supports participants to identify opportunities for resilience and understand how climate and nature can facilitate these opportunities. The course includes basic climate science, a background on the nature crisis, and why both are relevant to museums, as the training also explores colonialism and climate and Intangible Cultural Heritage and nature.
Our changing climate and depleting nature put us all at greater risk in the future. This is equally relevant to museums and galleries who may face damage to buildings, flooding, degradation of land or reduced access as a result. But nature and climate also provide us with opportunities for resilience – from funding and income generation to engaging with audiences and understanding our collections, this course can help your organisation find positives amongst the crises.
Content Advisory Warning
Please be aware we will be discussing colonial histories as part of this course. If any potential participants are not ready to demonstrate curiosity, self-reflection and openness around this topic, we may direct them to relevant learning resources and suggest participating in the course at a later date.
Who is it for
This course is available to Museum Futures programme participants. You will need to have completed an Organisational Health Checker before the course commences.
Whether you already have a climate plan or your organisation is completely new to the climate topic we’d love to hear from you.
We recommend groups of fewer than 20 participants per session and that they be from across your organisational structure (volunteers and board members are also welcome).
Places are limited due to the tailored and in-person nature of this training. Organisations deemed to have a higher level of need in this area will be prioritised. For example, those struggling to embed climate and nature into their work or, those who have uncertainty on where to begin
Format
Our facilitators will travel to your site to deliver the training. You are responsible for finding a space where your group can meet and learn. This does not necessarily need to be a formal learning space- for example it could also be a staff dining room, outdoor picnic area, or empty gallery. Part of the course requires your group to move around your venue- it can still be open to the public during this time.
Duration
This course will be taught in one day with a total duration of 6 hours, in-person by Museums Galleries Scotland facilitators. The start and end timings are flexible to suit your organisation. The course will be available from October 2025.
To book your space please complete the registration form. You will be asked about your preferred delivery date as part of the form. We will contact you regarding available dates that match your choices.
A completed Organisational Health Checker document must be submitted to participate in the training. The Museum Futures delivery team can provide support to help you compete this document.
Course delivery begins in October 2025. There is no deadline for applications. Training spaces are limited and allocated by:
- Priority for organisations deemed to have a higher level of need.
- First come, first serve for organisations with a similar/equal level of need.
