MGS quits Twitter/X

A smartphone displaying the X logo, resting on a laptop keyboard.

Following our decision in August 2024 to scale-back our presence on X, formerly Twitter, we’re now quitting the platform entirely.

We have several reasons for leaving X. We’re conscious that the political partiality of the platform’s governance runs counter to our desire for a safe, accurate, and inclusive social media presence. Changes to X’s algorithms have led to a significant drop in our engagement, making it harder for our content to reach its target audience. We’re also losing large numbers of followers as people close their accounts and migrate to other social media platforms.

Our X account will continue to exist as a placeholder, but we’re removing all existing posts from our profile and will no longer be monitoring this platform.

Quitting X will enable us to focus our efforts on other social media channels. We enjoy a large following on LinkedIn, and continue to develop our new Facebook and Instagram accounts. We regularly reflect on how we can best reach our audience online, and strive to meet their needs to the best of our capacity.

We’re aware that other museum organisations may also be evaluating their presence on X. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your plans with us, please contact our marketing team.
