Mhairi Cross
Board Trustee
Mhairi is an independent consultant specialising in the museum, heritage, and cultural sector. She was previously Chief Executive of the National Mining Museum Scotland (NMMS), where she led the organisation, with full responsibility for strategy, governance, finance, estates, collections, and public engagement. During her tenure, she secured significant grant funding, strengthened organisational resilience, and led major strategic initiatives including a comprehensive asset review, a site-wide conservation and buildings analysis, and the development of a ten-year masterplan alongside a recovery-focused business plan.
A highly experienced fundraiser, Mhairi has secured substantial income through successful grant applications and has also contributed to funding decision-making as a panel member for The Pilgrim Trust.
She brings extensive senior experience across local government in culture, creativity, and education, with a strong track record spanning creative learning, strategic planning, finance, operations, and governance. Her work across Falkirk, North Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire, and Renfrewshire included leading multiple arts and museum venues and contributing to major cultural regeneration programmes.
Mhairi also served as a Trustee of the Association of Independent Museums, acting as the Scottish representative from 2018 to 2026 and was a trustee of Scottish Youth Dance and Craft Scotland.
