Beyond Salacious: Exploring LGBTQ+ Themes with Family and Young Audiences

An adult with light skin and tied-back wavy red hair, an adult with light skin and medium length dark brown hair, and a child with light skin and short brown hair stand together on a raised walkway within a spacious gallery. The child is pointing to something high above them.

Museums do amazing work in appealing to and representing wide and diverse audiences. However, there can be a danger of museums ‘othering’ their audiences—finding approaches that apparently work and sticking to them, when we have the opportunity to reflect community as a whole, in a more holistic way.

Join Sacha Coward and MGS in looking beyond the more usual ways of exploring LGBTQ+ narratives in our museums, and ensuring the stories we tell reflect the communities we live in and amongst.

Sacha Coward is a freelance museum professional with a passion for working with hidden histories and underrepresented audiences.
