Joe starts by emphasising how social media should support your museum’s organisational and marketing objectives. This includes having a clear marketing plan and using your time effectively by prioritising consistent tone and visuals, ensuring key information is kept up-to-date, and conducting regular monitoring and engagement. Social media activity should be clearly linked to marketing goals such as attracting new audiences, building loyalty and raising awareness of mission and offer.

In this section, Joe explains that museums should aim to identify their target audiences, seek to understand what motivates these audiences to use social media, and try to create content that meets their expectations.

Joe provides examples of museums who effectively translate their mission and values into a cohesive and engaging social media presence. He also highlights a variety of methods to grab the attention of audiences on social media, from eye-catching visuals and video content to working with influencers and use of social media as a search engine.

28:00 – 42:08: Evaluating impact and final recommendations
The session closes with guidance on regularly reviewing analytics, aiming for sustained engagement, comparing performance with other attractions, and collecting data from visitors. Followed by a short Q&A.
