Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) welcomes the publication of Trans-Inclusive Culture by the University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG).

This clear and carefully considered report features practical guidance which will enable cultural organisations to make meaningful progress on the inclusion of trans individuals and communities in all areas of their work.

We encourage staff and volunteers at all levels of Scotland’s museum sector workforce to engage with Trans-Inclusive Culture by reading the report, considering the status of LGBTQ+ inclusivity at their organisations, and implementing positive change wherever they can.

Our support for Trans-Inclusive Culture echoes the formal endorsements which this guidance has received from cultural organisations across the UK. We’re heartened by the strength of this commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity and pleased to see such widespread recognition for the work of RCMG.

Trans-Inclusive Culture aligns with our values, with our ambitions for a truly inclusive museum sector, and with the Inclusion and Diversity aims of Scotland’s Museums and Galleries Strategy.

The guidelines have encouraged us to consider our own practice and highlighted that MGS has more to do to become a proactively trans-inclusive organisation. We will use the guidance to develop an LGBTQ+ inclusivity action plan for our organisation.

We’re grateful to RCMG for prompting conversation within MGS on the topic of LGBTQ+ inclusivity. It’s our hope that, by implementing the advice in their report, we’ll be able to ensure that our organisation is a safe and welcoming space for all.
