People at the Heart of Museums in £434K Funding Awards

Three children with brown hair and light skin tone are smiling and walking in front of a Royal National Lifeboat Institution boat in a room with machinery and other boats.

Today Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS), the national development body for the sector has announced the £434K Museum Development Fund is being awarded to nine museums and
galleries across Scotland, thanks to support from the Scottish Government.

The awards are given to help support museums to remain vital resources for their communities as places that are accessible for all to enjoy, be inspired by, and learn in. From creating more accessible collections, working with schools, to co-producing museum programmes with communities, the awarded projects are centered around bringing people into the heart of museums.

At the Scottish Maritime Museum community exhibitions, events, and activities will help strengthen the connection between the museum and their community. Recognising that there is a gap in their collection on faith and religion, Museums & Galleries Edinburgh will work with Edinburgh Interfaith Association and a diverse range of faith groups across Edinburgh. A group of community-curators will help create and promote a collection which is representative of the broad experiences of faith and religion within the city. Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum’s new building will provide space to display much of their collection, and coupled with fresh interpretation and interactive models, will provide a valuable educational resource to school and college students.

Lucy Casot, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland said:

“It is vital that we support museums and galleries to continue their important work engaging with communities and telling the stories of their places and people. We’re delighted to support nine organisations through the Museum Development Fund in their diverse approaches to creating more inclusive places that put people at the heart of museums.”
