We wish a happy retirement to Loretta Mordi, who left MGS at the end of 2025 after 18 years of dedicated service as our Museum Development Manager for Learning and Engagement.

Announcing her retirement, Loretta said: “I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had here particularly in advancing strategic learning end engagement across the Scottish museum sector. It has been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated teams, past and present, and to support the sector’s achievements.”

Loretta’s work with us was driven by her passionate advocacy for the vital role of museums and galleries as spaces for education and lifelong learning. She was responsible for delivering a broad range of events, training opportunities, advisory groups, and strategic partnerships on behalf of the museum sector workforce.

Key to Loretta’s success was her ability to build strong relationships both within and beyond the museum sector. Through her work with partners including Education Scotland, the Group for Education in Museums (GEM), and Kids in Museums, Loretta supported museums to work closely with schools and align their programming with the Curriculum for Excellence. She also fostered collaboration among educators and museum practitioners by organising popular Knowledge Exchanges and “Blether Together” sessions.

Loretta promoted diversity and inclusion in all areas of her work. Her commitment to access ensured that museums and galleries addressed physical, sensory, cultural, and intellectual barriers to visitor engagement and experiences. Loretta also led on the delivery of the race equality and anti-racist curricula recommendations of the 2022 Empire, Slavery & Scotland’s Museums report.

We’re grateful to Loretta for her valuable role in shaping the strategic direction and development of learning and engagement in the Scottish museum sector. We wish her all the best in her retirement and look forward to keeping in touch.
