Empire, Slavery & Scotland's Museums Project Research

Summary

The Empire, Slavery & Scotland’s Museums project, sponsored by the Scottish Government, explored how Scotland’s museums can contribute to our understanding of the legacies of empire, colonialism, and historic slavery.

In 2021- 2022 a national consultation was held to establish public and expert perspectives on how museums can contribute to our understanding of the legacies of empire, colonialism, and historic slavery. As a result of this project, and based on the evidence gathered, the project Steering Group have made a set of recommendations to the Scottish Government.

In developing the recommendations, the Steering Group looked broadly at potential mechanisms for addressing the legacies of empire, colonialism, and historic slavery in museum spaces and through collections. They were supported by the following bodies of research:

  • Glasgow Museums
  • Intercultural Youth Scotland
  • Museums Galleries Scotland
  • Rachel Forrest
  • The Diffley Partnership
