Delivering Change: Museum Activists Programme

Introduction

Delivering Change: Museum Activists is a free anti-oppression programme offering you, as staff and volunteers in museums, training and support to help all people to access culture. It has been developed by Museums Galleries Scotland and an Expert Advisory Group. It’s funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players, and the Scottish Government.

During the programme of coaching, reflection, and peer-to-peer support you will: 

  • Become one of the Museum Activists in Scotland leading in anti-oppression and human rights 
  • Learn how to identify and implement anti-oppressive behaviours and processes 
  • Deepen your community impact through relationships built on solidarity 
  • Maximise the momentum of previous diversity, equity, and inclusion work 
  • Have space to make mistakes in a supportive environment 

What does the programme consist of?

The programme is designed to support you either as part of your role in an organisation, or as personal development.  

The programme will be online. It consists of both self-directed learning and facilitated learning and support. In recognition of the diversity of working patterns across the sector workforce, the programme will operate with flexible times for participants.

During the programme you’ll explore how to put anti-oppression principles into action through these sessions: 

  • Museums Association Essentials Courses: Introducing Decolonisation in Museums and Supporting Anti-racism 
  • Human Rights Based Approach 
  • Participatory Practice – working with Children and Young People 
  • Building the Decolonised Museum with Professor Tommy Curry 
  • Disability Equality Training 
  • Developing Anti-Racist Critical Thinking 
  • Regular facilitated peer to peer online meet ups 

Who can participate in the programme?

The programme is open to all individuals and teams in Scotland who work, freelance, or volunteer in the museum sector. All confidence levels are welcome and no prior experience of anti-oppression is needed. 

What to expect at the end of the programme

  • Confidence and tools to put anti-oppression into action in your work and life 
  • To work in solidarity with people who have been systematically excluded  
  • To understand how to make decisions rooted in anti-oppression principles 
  • To understand how to apply Human Rights and a Human Rights based approach in museums 
  • To be more resilient by being part of a large Museum Activist network who will support each other on their anti-oppression journeys

Training information

  • Online and flexible to your working pattern 
  • Directed and self-led training 
  • Choose either the full training (12 hours per month), or parts of it (4 hours per month) 
  • Two cohorts available to join. Cohort One starts in April 2024. Cohort Two available to sign up to from April 2024.

How to sign up

To be considered for cohort 2 of the programme, please sign up by 5pm on 30 September, 2024.

To sign up, please choose one of the options below to respond to the questions in the enrolment:

  • Complete the simple online form
  • Submit a video of up to 10 minutes length
  • Submit a visual collage, 1 collage per question
  • Submit an audio recording of up to 10 minutes length

Who can participate in the programme?

Anyone in Scotland who works, freelances, or volunteers in the museum sector.

I don't have capacity to participate as part of my role, can I still join?

You can participate in the programme either as part of your role in an organisation, or outside of it as personal development.

The programme is online and will be flexible to your working pattern.

 

If I move jobs to another organisation, can I still remain as a Museum Activist?

Yes. You can participate in the programme either as part of your role in an organisation or outside of it as personal development, so your membership of the Activists programme would remain if you move to another institution.

It says that training can be either 12 hours (full training) or 4 hours (part training) per month. What does this mean?

The training modules in the Activists programme are self-contained. Each module has a set number of hours to complete, and this varies depending on the training module. We have calculated that doing all the modules would need 12 hours dedicated time per month. You can sign up for as many modules as you’re able to manage over the course of the programme (April 2024 to April 2026). We will help you to design a programme that works best for you.
